Joy Essential Oil

I’ve shared with you a bit about being able to get off antidepressant medication that I’ve taken for over 15 years – I am now completely drug free for over 2 1/2 months from any antidepressant medication.  I am so thankful and grateful and I feel that I owe it to my use of essential oils as I weaned myself off medication and began treating my symptoms with natural essential oils.

So many have wondered about my routine, I have an updated post here that gives very specific information on the oils I use daily and how I use them, Overcoming Depression using Essential Oils.

Many essential oils help relieve depression. They contain molecules which cross the blood/brain barrier, and they can probably help us more than anything else available.

You’ve heard that aromatherapy can “uplift the mood.”  I didn’t give it much thought until I began using Young Living Essential Oils for other uses and saw how effective they were for treating other symptoms.

I’ve felt two have played a role in my success; Joy™ and Harmony™.  Today I will share about Joy™ and in the next few weeks I will highlight Harmony™.

joy essential oilJoy™ is a luxuriously exotic blend with uplifting overtones that create magnetic energy and bring joy to the heart. Honestly, when I first opened the bottle and smelled it, I was like, “UGH!”  I did not like the scent really at all.  I knew there was a strong geranium scent, which I had read was great for symptoms of depression, but it was very powerful.   Little did I know that often times the smells from essential oils that are most ‘offending’ to you are the actual oils/smell that your body is craving!

I began dabbing a few drops over my heart on my wrists and behind my ears several times a day.  I also began using it in my diffuser – which really helped create a refreshing and uplifting environment!  It really seem to make a difference for my family – a little attitude adjustment, but they just didn’t realize it  :-)

A note on diffusers too, I was able to get my Young Living Home Diffuser for free with the special YL-Oil-Diffuserpromotion for January, but when you purchase any one of the “Start Living” enrollment kits you can get a $40 OFF Diffuser Coupon, which is great!  (An exciting update - you can purchase a starter kit now that includes JOY as well as a diffuser!) I purchased a much cheaper diffuser from Lowe’s last month and returned it shortly after I began using it.  It worked intermittently and did not diffuse nearly as well as the YL one I had.  Yes, it cost a bit more, but I would prefer longer life, than just cheap.

What I really enjoy about the blends that Young Living puts together, is the combinations you can get, but you don’t have to buy all the individual oils to create your own blends.  It is all done for you – and you can grab these great little ball rollers, officially called AromaGlide Roller Fitamits to replace any of the bottle toppers to create a ready-made roll-on applicator.  I need to grab me another bottle of Joy in April so I can create my roll-on – I’ve done so with Lavender and it makes it so easy to use and dab on.

There are 10 different oils that make up Joy’s blend:

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

Has analgesic, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is refreshing and uplifting and helps with anxiety and depression.

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)

Increases relaxation; balances male and female energies. It also restores confidence and equilibrium.

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-depressant, and sedative properties. Its aroma lifts the spirit and releases negative emotions.

Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora)

Has antiviral, antibacterial, anti-infectious and antifungal properties. It is emotionally stabilizing and sometimes used for depression.

Lemon (Citrus limon)

Has antiseptic and immune stimulating properties. It is purifying and uplifting. A 1995 Mie University study documented the ability of citrus fragrances to combat depression and boost immunity.

Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)

Has antidepressant and antispasmodic properties. It is emotionally uplifting

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale)

Has antidepressant and antispasmodic properties. It is emotionally uplifting.

Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)

Has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anti-infectious properties. It is calming and relaxing and is used for depression and stress.

Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii)

Has antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It helps reduce nervous tension and anxiety.

Rose (Rosa damascena)

Has anti-hemorrhaging, anti-infectious and aphrodisiac properties. It is stimulating to the mind and creates a sense of well being.

In addition, here are some other ways you can simply add “Joy” to your everyday life:

  • Put 2-3 drops of your favorite YL oil on a cotton ball placed inside the vacuum canister of your vacuum cleaner.
  • Put 1-2 drops of Joy on a tissue, inhale
  • Use 3-4 drops in your bath water to boost your mood.
  • Place ‘neatly’ on areas of poor circulation.
  • Place 2 drops on a cloth that you put in the dryer for great smelling clothes.
  • Uplifting deodorant – Mix in a small jar – 2 oz. Cornstarch, 1 oz. Baking soda, and a few drops Joy essential oil
  • Add 10 to 12 drops of your favorite YL essential oil to 2 oz. of Massage Oil base (like grapeseed oil) for a quick massage.
  • Put a few drops in plain lotion.
  • Use a drop ‘neatly’ to help reduce irritability and nervousness (great for kids!)
  • Place a few drops on abdomen to relieve menstrual cramping.
  • Joy may lower blood pressure, especially when stressed induced.
  • Use Joy for postpartum depression.
  • Diffuse Joy in the home to lift everyone’s spirits – this is one of my favorites!
  • Joy may help with lower back pain. Rub a few drops on each day.
  • Use Joy on note cards and letters to make a lovely scented stationary.
  • Place a few drops of Joy in your car placed in a cotton ball
  • Use a few drops on temples and breathe deeply for emotional headaches.
  • Use Joy to boost libido
  • Use Joy daily during times of emotional stress.
  • Sprinkle a few drops in potpourri to improve the fragrance.
  • Inhale or dilute and massage into muscles for increased energy.
  • Apply Joy daily to prevent mood swings.
  • Rub a drop of Joy oil over the heart and on the bottom of each foot to relieve feelings of frustration or depression and prevent mood swings
  • Put a drop of Joy oil on the tip of the nose to uplift your mood.

I am ever so grateful to have discovered the benefits of using Joy and look forward to sharing with you more on the oils I am incorporating in our home.  Even my husband, the ever ending skeptic is beginning to come around!

If you would like to grab a bottle of Joy for yourself either as a customer or perhaps receive oils at a discount, you can find more information here on how you can do that.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here and I will try to answer to the best of my ability.  I know so many of us suffer from depression and anxiety and would love to have relief.  It is my “JOY” to share my natural remedy with you!

[ Smiles ] Ah, the magic of essential oils!

  • Jenny

    Hi Susan,
Do you know what Young Life says about Doterra oils? They are big here in Southern Oregon and purport to have broke off from Young Life for ethical reasons and, of course, claim that their product is more superior. I really want to use more oils but find them to be so expensive, at least through Doterra.
    Jenny
P.S. Is there a way to make your daily planner bigger for those of us who’s eyes are starting to go?

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

There is so much available about the “differences” between Young Life and DoTerra – it is all over the internet. You can find information and documentation to sway one way or the other. For myself, I had to purchase the same oil in both brands and decide for myself which I felt was better for me and my family. I also read information that tended to help me make a decision. I went with the company that had been around the longest and was the front leader with essential oils in the mainstream. That might not be the best fit for everyone, so I urge you to do your research!

I will see what I can do about the planner bigger. You may need to adjust and print it differently on your printer? That might help

hi does anyone have any ideas for hormonal issues anxiety issues with depression chronic fatigue if they are used with antidepressants safely. or did anyone. i am trying to get off my medications but need some help… i know nobody is a dr. but thought someone might have used…i was looking at the hormones one and wondering if that was good..thanks.

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

There is a great oil for hormonal help – http://www.youngliving.com/anti-aging-creams/Progessence-Plus I have not personally used this but know many who have and love it. I can say from personal experience, that using oils can in fact get you to a place to stop needing prescription antidepressants – also using Joy and Harmony or Peace and Calming can help with anxiety issues.

    Susan,

I love using essential oils for my anxiety. I’ve only been using them a short while though so I’ll be using the tips you gave us to see which Works best for me. I loved the idea of putting the oil on a cotton wool ball and putting it into the vacuum cleaner. I’m getting the credit card out right now to get the diffuser you recommend.

    Thanks for the tips,

    Kim

    Susan,
How long did it take you to come off your your medication? Thank you
    Tara

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

It was about a 2 month weaning process….but each person is different and I am sure it will depend on the current medication, your dose and what the suggestion is from your Dr.

  • Rose M Landers

I have been flipping thru your site and now cannot find the info I was looking for. I am 4 months free of paxil after 12 years. I have been miserable. I saw a new accurouncturist today and she is promoting oils. I am skeptical of anyone that might be trying to make money off of selling a product and question if it is something that will really work. She sells doterra products. I read about your journey and the different oils you used to treat depression, however there was some info that I can’t find now that referred to oils to help the withdrawal symptoms. Is that protocol different than what you used to treat your depression? I am suffering greatly with depression, sweats, loss of weight.because I’m feeling full all the time (many medical tests showed there is no physical reason for the fullness and weight loss). My mind is preoccupied with negative thoughts and I remain ate constantly about unpleasant things. In other words, I am questioning my decision to go off paxil and am trying to figure out if I’m deoressed because I no longer take it and probably should, or if the withdrawal is just overwhelming me. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have that could steer me in the right direction.

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I just got my kit in the mail yesterday and am really hoping this helps my daughter with her severe depression and anxiety. She takes so much medication with little relief. I have Joy diffusing in her room right now and put some on her. I need to get Harmony since it didn’t come in the kit.

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

Praying for help with your daughter!!

I am trying to get off zoloft which i take for axiety and depression. Do you think joy essential oil would help me?

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

Janice, I think Joy would be helpful as well as Peace and Calming, and Stress Away, both of which come with the Premium Starter Kit – I would love to help guide you along and support you if you like. We have a great facebook page that is a wonderful private place to share as well.

Susan, I have suffered from depression since the birth of my second child in 1998, when she suddenly weaned me. Fastforward – I now have 7 children – all mine. I also was dx with fibromyalgia. I have taken antidepressants off and on with some help, mainly with tearfulness. My mother suddenly passed away in August and I am realing from the grief. Now I have severe insomnia – I got Joy in the mail – was excited – opened it and was like Oh My God! I can’t stand it! What should I do? Also I just signed up with the Premium starter kit but it hasn’t come in yet. I want to get my sleep back to normal, feel alive again and happy. It it possible with EO’s. I take Ultram up to 400 mg a day for the fibro just to get up. It seems to give me a little energy and bit of calm. But I am getting so resistant to it that it requires more to just help my pain. I take Zoloft 100 mg. I know you aren’t a doctor – I just was wondering what your thoughts were. My children and my husband need me. My husband said he doesn’t want to lose me again – my brother died to suicide 4 years ago and I was just getting my life back this past year. He was my best friend. I spent two years immobilized. I can’t do this agoin. The Insomnia is devastating me. I am exhausted, gained weight (from midnite eating) and just miserable. I found YL oils a few weeks ago seeking help for my 16 yr old daughter who has a severe case of mono.- five months now – discovered Thieves….and now I have HOPE for me…. I am being transparent so maybe my issues and your advise could help someone else too. Grateful for any advice you may have – Elizabeth

Thank you for sharing your story – I will be praying for you – it is so hard at times to get good direction, advice, prayer and solutions. I have emailed you information and will look forward to your response!

I’m so glad I just stumbled across this article!! I needed it desperately! With your tips, I think I may be able to overcome my depression. Thank you!!! It runs in my family & I’ve tried to avoid it for a few years. Everyone is on medicine & I don’t want to go that route.
    I’m feeling hopeful!!

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

Yes, there is hope!! Young Living oils are incredible and the purest you can get, so will help your body find balance and be the best it can be!! So glad you stumbled on my post!

  • Michelle

Hi Susan. I have been struggling with depression since August 2013. I was also dealing with this for a few months in 2012. I am currently on Wellbutrin for 6 weeks with no real improvement. This is the 4th medication I’ve tried since September with no relief. I struggle to get through every day. I want to be myself again to be there for my husband & 2 boys. I love them so much & want to enjoy our family. I am doing the best I can but feel disconnected. I miss my life. I am willing to try essential oils. Please give me any advice you can. Thank you!

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

I will email you Michelle, I know how difficult it is and frustrating. Look for my note.

  • gloria

I also am om zoloft..have started to wean myself off very slowly. I just read about the eo and am thrilled to have found this. A question I have is how do you know how many milligrams to go down when you use the oils.not using the oils yet.thanks

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

I worked with my Dr. to decide how to wean and I suggest that as well. It was a gradual process and I would be so happy to help you too!

  • Teresa

I’ve been off zoloft since my first daughter was born five years ago and was diagnosed with some health issues shortly after and have been trying to fight depression naturally since then. I purchased JOY and PEACE AND CALM for insomnia. How often do you apply JOY? I really love the scent. I purchased a locket necklace from etsy and put a small pad inside with a drop of JOY to be surrounding me all day. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

I apply it as often as 3-4 times a day when needed

  • Kayla

I am currently taking zoloft and am having a bout of increased anxiety. Am I able to use essential oils while I am taking zoloft? Can I start with the oils before I begin weaning off the drug? Is there any harm to taking zoloft and using the oils at the same time? I would appreciate your input.

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

That is how my depression begins, when my anxiety gets overwhelming….. I totally can relate. Yes, you can begin using oils while taking your medications, especially with the goal to wean off!! I would check with your Dr. and get a schedule to decrease your medication and then pray about it as well. I would love to help you in this journey…..there are so many moms who’ve joined me in taking charge of their emotional health using essential oils!!

  • Kayla

Did u have success with using the oils for anxiety and depression? Were you on a medication and eventually able to quit taking it?

  • Evon

Hi Susan, I would like to check if the YL EO is edible? I know of people in Asia are taking the oil with water or ‘neat’. Kindly advice, thanks.

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

Hope this helps! I use YL oils both in water, in vegetable capsules as well as use in recipes, as I shared in today’s post – 4/25/14

Young Living Essential Oils are not only therapeutic-grade in quality but many of them are so safe they are certified by the Food and Drug Administration as GRAS or FA.

If it is GRAS then it has a proven track record of safety for consumption and is certified by the Food and Drug Administration as generally recognized as safe.
If it is FA then it means it has no track record but has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a safe food additive.

    Hi Susan,
A pastor’s wife introduced me to Young Living Essential oils. We purchased the starter kit to try hoping it will help my husband’s condition. In 2011, after the death of my dad from heart attack, it reminded my husband of his mom that he found in bed dead with the same issue. He started having anxiety and panic attack. He tried dealing it with exposure therapy and reading a lot of books on anxiety. He don’t want to take anxiety medications because of bad side effects. He started to feel dizzy, like he is walking on a boat, that the ground is not level. When he move his head the dizziness worsen. He went to 2 ENTs, Cardiologist, Electrophysiologist, had an MRI, VNG testing for dizziness – the findings indicates vestibular disorder and migraine vertigo. He also have some depression sometimes when he feels tired of being dizzy and just could not accept it. Noise make dizziness worse. Thanks for your article on Joy essential oil. I don’t like the smell of it too, but I will try diffusing it at night. I might apply it on his feet too. He also has acid reflux, I started applying peppermint in his stomach, I use virgin olive oil with peppermint because he started to have red spots after I used peppermint with out diluting it.

Though my husband feels dizzy all the time, he can still run and play tennis. He said when he is playing tennis, he could not even feel the dizziness. His dizziness might be caused by anxiety. We hope and pray that these essential oils will help change our lives – it is so hard living with someone who is not feeling well. When one member of the family suffers, all is affected. Thanks for your time, God bless!

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

OH I pray you find some relief! Yes, Joy – it is really amazing – also valor would be one use several times a day – topically and diffusing!

  • kiane

I just recently weaned myself off of Zoloft because it was doing nothing for me anymore. I am still feeling “off” though – depression tends to run in my family. I would rather not be on an antidepressant, if possible and would love to get more information from you.

  • http://www.theconfidentmom.com Susan

I have wrote two more posts on my journey, hopefully they can be helpful. I highly suggesting using Young Living Oils to help with emotional balancing –

I’ve been studying essential oils and the Bible. One thing I’ve learned is that the “Oil of Joy” or the “Oil of Gladness” is not really an oil, but rather the Holy Spirit. That’s so exciting to me — wherever or whomever the Holy Spirit anoints, the result is joy, joy, joy!! Read this beautiful sermon by Charles Spurgeon: http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/1273.htm

What would be the best oil to start for MAJOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY?
I have been on every anti-depressant there is, also have done ECT(which dident help) and am currently doing TMS therapy. I currently take like 6 medications! And nothing is HELPING!!
I feel so lost and have little HOPE of becoming myself again:(
