Weekly Household Quick Tip

This week’s task in the Weekly Household Planner:

Cleaning garage

Yes, it is that time of year!  It seems that over the winter we can accumulate a lot of extra stuff in our garages.  This task today can be as quick as you would like or more detailed.  You can simply tidy up your garage or you can go in for the major de-cluttering, the choice is up to you.  If you go in big, make sure you enlist some other family members.

Here are a few pointers to get you headed in the right direction.

1.  Take everything out of your garage and put it in the driveway (well, nearly everything!)  It seems like a big project and it is – but this is the only way for you to see how much stuff you truly have.  You may find that when you have to put it back in the garage and find a location for it, you decide you just don’t need it anymore!

2.  As you are replacing items back in the garage, determine the usefulness of every item.  If you do not have a use for an item, or have not used the item in over a year, it is probably time to get rid of it.  Sort items into piles like giveaway, sell on eBay, sell on Craigslist, give to a friend.

3.  Take breaks while you are cleaning and put on some fun music to keep you motivated.  If you get discouraged just think of the satisfaction you will have when you have a clean garage and know where to find things.  And if you have been unable to park your car in the garage, just close your eyes and think of how lovely it will be to park INSIDE when the rain is pouring and you have to unload the groceries.

4.  Celebrate!  When your driveway is clear of all the stuff, breath a huge sigh of relief.  Make sure you schedule follow up time to sell items you plan to sell and give items to friends.  If you want to make real progress, take all the ‘giveaway’ items directly to your local drop station immediately upon finishing the job.  You won’t have time to change your mind and the stuff will be gone!

When was the last time you really cleaned your garage?

We make sure to never put anything in the garage unless both of our cars are already parked in there. So far, that has worked like a charm to make sure we do not have much build-up in there. :-)

I’m so glad I tackled this task this week. It took me about 2 hours on Sunday…and I only did “my half” of the garage. But, that is all the kids stuff. I organized all their sports stuff into bins, like soccer tub, basketball tub, baseball tub, and then misc outdoor toys. Plus I swept out all the leaves and dust and cobwebs. It looks so much better and I can even walk around the van when it is in the garage! Now if only I could get my husband to do “his side”.

Hooray for you!! That little thing of sweeping the leaves out makes a huge difference – I did the same thing. If you find out the secret for getting your hubby to do his side, please pass it on!
