9-fall-fun-activities

The mornings are getting cool and the leaves are turning – fall is in the air.  I am definitely one who enjoys the cool, brisk mornings, the warm beverages that you can hold in your hand and sip and the routine that fall brings.

Over the years our family has shared a few fun fall activities to bring in the season and create tradition.  Perhaps incorporating one or two of these into your fall season would bring some needed change and family bonding, they have for us!

Hayrides

We done a few hayrides during my years as a parent, I am going on 22 years now as a mom – we were out of that season for awhile, but with a four year old in the house – it is time again to enjoy this fun fall tradition.  Even though we have many allergic to grass/hay in our family – we’ve got a remedy for that!

Decorate

We have fun bringing out the fall decorations at our house.  This is something I didn’t really know my kids looked forward to until one year I didn’t bring them out fast enough.  Hanging a simple fall wreath on the front door and changing some decor inside, really freshens things up.  I love this printable I found too – perfect in my frame by our front door.

Make Apple Butter

Fall means apples, especially in our neck of the woods – The Pacific Northwest!  You can certainly go pick apples at a local farm, find a farmers market and buy a huge box, or just use what you have.  I just made a great batch of Crock Pot Apple Butter (this recipe is the easiest and my hubby’s favorite!) and it is the perfect way to ring in apple season.

Homemade Apple Cider

Homemade is always better, in my opinion, for so many reasons.  You can change ingredients to fit your taste as well as make it healthier.  I found this easy recipe for Homemade Apple Cider and I am going to mark it on our calendar!

Leaves

One of my most favorite things to do as a child was to rake leaves and jump in them.  We had a huge yard with the biggest Maple tree – which filled our backyard with leaves.  It is fun to run and jump, but why not do a few crafts with leaves and/or press them to use in your home for decorating.

Enjoy Chilly

Bundle up and get outside!  Take a walk in the woods, ride bikes on a trail take a stroll down to grab a hot beverage or make some hot chocolate at home before heading off outside.  Hats, scarves and down jackets are perfect for bundling up and enjoying the outdoors.

Pumpkin Pie

Why not try making a pumpkin pie completely from scratch!??  I know sounds crazy – but what an experience and memory making.  Buying or even picking the pumpkin fresh from the field, cooking down the fresh pumpkin and making the crust – this would be an all day project, but worth every penny!  Take pictures to keep the memory alive, you likely won’t want to do it again!  :-)

Marshmallow Roast

Bundle up after dinner and head outside to roast some marshmallows, drink cocoa and make s’mores!  We purchased a fire pit (like this one) and have not used it as much as I would have hoped….. so I am determined to get a bit more excited about gathering everyone up after dinner and having some fun around the fire pit rather than just the TV.  Conversations develop that would not otherwise, I know this and it takes intentional set-up to make it happen.  We might even pick a book that would be fun to read through and do that while keeping warm and watching the flames.

Corn Maze

I admit – I hate corn mazes – but others in my family love them.  So….. I go too.  A few years ago we went to a pumpkin patch which had a maze and in the center was a small baseball field.  It was just like out of “Field of Dreams” – and to this day my four year old talks about that corn maze.  Memories…….

What is your favorite fall activity to do as a family?

DIY-Homemade-Chest-Vapor-Rub

Are you ready for winter?  I always like to be prepared for anything – all the stuff that comes with season changes, I am on it!

This weekend my daughter and my four year old made up an easy Homemade Vapor Chest Rub made specifically to help fight off the sniffles, breathing trouble, coughing and feeling blah – with an amazing blend of Young Living Raven Essential Oil and Eucalyptus Radiata.

Why this blend?  There are some amazing properties in these two oils, here is just a bit on these two giants taken from the EODR 6th Edition.

Raven

This blend helps support a healthy respiratory system.  You’ll find these singles in the blend:

Ravintsara:  has a spicy, camphorous, warm scent, similar to eucalyptus but softer.

Lemon:  has a strong, purifying, citrus scent that is revitalizing and uplifting. Lemon consists of 68 percent dlimonene, a powerful antioxidant.

Wintergreen:  contains the same active ingredient (methyl salicylate) as birch and is beneficial in massage for soothing head tension and muscles after exercising.

Peppermint:  has a strong, clean, fresh, minty aroma.

Eucalyptus Radiata:  is cooling, refreshing, and energizing.

“In 2012, Tunisian researchers investigated the activity of eight eucalyptus species against several pathogenic organisms. The researchers concluded that eucalyptus oils that are rich in the compound 1,8-cineole ‘may serve as potential candidates against enterovirus infections.’”   SOURCE

Eucalyptus Radiata

This single oil, as seen from the testing above, has the potential to be very effective in supporting normal healthy immune systems.

I decide to combine these two oils for this chest rub that would already be in an easy to use diluted form so we could easily apply when needed.  I wanted additional Eucalyptus, so added the additional 10 drops.

Raven-Homemade-Chest-Rub

DIY All-Natural Vapor Chest Rub Recipe

1/2 CUP Coconut Oil (we use this)

40 drops of Young Living’s Raven Essential Oil

10 drops of Young Living’s Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil

Melt the coconut oil and add in the essential oil.  Mix and then pour into a glass jar that can be sealed.  Makes 1/2 cup.

Chest-Rub

This was super easy to make and was fun for my four year old to help out with.  Now he is much more prone to take an active approach to help apply it to his chest – you know how finicky those toddlers can be sometimes!  You could also add some Rosemary or Thyme, other oils that help relieve congestion too. Make sure everyone washes their hands with soap after applying to avoid any accidental touching of eyes, or other sensitive areas.

I had gotten a 5 ML bottle of Raven as one of the FREE promo oils for September with a 190 PV order with Young Living as a member.  The timing couldn’t be better with viral season coming into full swing and the threat of this power virus coming at us.

Back-to-School-Germ-Buster-Young-Living1

If your kids aren’t already back in school – I know you are gearing up like me.  We head back next week and I know I had to share my ultimate favorite Germ Busting Secrets for our home.  Instead of “Back to School” it should be “Back to Germs“.

If you are like me, a mom who really doesn’t want anyone to miss school because they are sick (I would much rather take a day off from school to have fun as a family!) then you will want some effective, all-natural germ protection in your home.

Here is where Young Living’s exclusive Thieves Essential Oil blend comes into play.  I shared how much I love Thieves and how this particular oil turned my skeptic hubby into an essential oil believer in a previous post.

Using Thieves oil in our home, both diffused and topically has helped keep illness at bay many times – in fact in the Essential Oils Desk Reference book I found this study information, which confirms my own personal use testimony:

“Studies conducted at Weber State University (Ogden, UT) during 1997 demonstrated the killing power of these amazing oils against airborne microorganisms.  The analysis showed that after 10 minutes of Thieves diffusion in the air, there was an 82% reduction in the gram positive Micrococcus lutes organism bioaersol, a 96% reduction in gram negative Pseudomonas aerginosa organism bioaerosol, and a 44% reduction in S. aureus bioaerosol (Chao SC, et al., 1998).

So for those of you who are like me who need some interpretation – Thieves reduces airborne germs – so think of what it does when applied topically?   Wham, Bam, 1, 2, 3, protection!

We use a few other items in our daily routine to help keep us healthy when the germs are floating all around us, come check them out.

Thieves Foaming Hand Soap

This all natural hand-cleansing formula contains the powerful Thieves essential oil blend but also contains gentle ingredients such as vitamin E, aloe vera, and Ginkgo biloba to help moisturize and soften the skin.  This is a staple in our home – no more hand soap with antimicrobial chemicals for us – especially after reading this article a few weeks back.  I found this interesting from the article:

“Triclosan and triclocarban are endocrine disruptors, Halden explains. The risk there is that the chemicals can mimic thyroid hormones, potentially disrupting the metabolism and causing weight gain or weight loss. Previous research has also shown a connection between higher levels of triclosan in urine, and allergy diagnoses in children.”   SOURCE

No thank you for me and my family.

I also love that I can purchase the large Foaming Hand Soap Refill – making it even more cost effective!

Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier

No water for washing hands – No worries!  Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier is designed to clean and freshen hands without water.  It also contains the powerful Thieves essential oil as well as active skin-moisturizing ingredients to prevent dry skin.  Plus the ethanol in this hand-purifier evaporates – love that!

I carry this in my purse, have one in the car and also in backpacks and more!  It is just the right size, making for easy pocket placement too.

Thieves Spray

Ready for the big guns?  Thieves Spray is an all-natural, petrochemical-free antiseptic spray ideal for purifying surfaces like door handles, table tops at a restaurant, toilet seats, airplane trays and more.  It is very effective and may be used to spray surfaces that need cleaning from dust, mold and other microorganisms.

When we have a itchy throat, I even use this spray in my mouth – it will kick it RIGHT NOW!  It is a convenient size to take in your purse or backpack too.

You know I love my Young Living Essentials Oil and the difference they have made keeping us healthier – are you a bit more curious?   Come check out how you can get your hands on some too!

Super Hero Back to School Shopping Tips

Back-to-School-Shopping-Tips

It’s that time of year! Your child needs school supplies and clothes. Where do you start? How do you pay for it all?

I love tips, especially easy tips for back to school - Here are some tips for making the grade with your grade school kid this year.

Dressed for Success

Your grade school child may not have the picky tastes of a teenager, but he or she is going to need some new clothes this year.  I know, we all hate the dreaded school shopping.  I love the season I am in right now.  I have a 17 year old who basically does his own shopping and we give him a budget.  I don’t have to worry about our 13 year old, and our 4 year old is very easy.  By the way, my favorite kid clothing store is Old Navy – purchasing online is my cup of tea!

Before you get started, make sure you go through last year’s clothing and find out what fits and what doesn’t. This includes shoes, socks, and underwear, too. Grade school kids can grow really fast!

Here are some more ideas for clothes shopping with your grade school child.

  • Plan your shopping trip for a day when you don’t have to rush, and when you don’t have anything planned the night before. Being rested and ready helps everyone’s mood, and so does being able to take your time. Or better yet, save time and energy by shopping online, especially for basics.  Target and Old Navy are perfect for underwear, socks and basic t-shirts.
  • Call the school where your child will be attending and make sure there aren’t any changes to the dress code. If your child will be attending this school for the first time, you’ll want to find out what the dress code is.
  • Keeping it simple helps a lot. Depending on his (or her) age, he will be better able to dress himself as the year goes on. Having easy-to-fasten clothes can help a lot to facilitate this process. Tough buttons (or lots of buttons), lacings, belts, and small head-holes can make dressing a frustrating experience. Go for clothes with large head-holes, zippers, and easy (and few) buttons.

School Supplies

Moving on to school supplies – like the clothes, it’s a good idea to check with your school list – you can access that list online usually or even find the specific grade list at your local stores.  I know that some teachers specify brands, colors, and so forth, so making sure you have the exact teacher/grade list is important.

Here are some other tips for shopping for school supplies with your grade school child.

  • Go generic on writing items like pens and pencils. Getting fancy, unique writing implements only leads to competition in the classroom and the possibility that your child’s fancy pens will get stolen. Unless the teacher requires otherwise, go with standard #2 pencils.  I love simple!
  • Markers should be water-based, and crayons are usually needed in packs of 16. Consider a box to store and carry these small, easily-lost items.
  • Erasers are always needed in grade school. A large, pink eraser like you had in school is a good purchase. Some erasers that fit on the ends of pencils are inexpensive additions, too.
  • Your child’s school may not supply paper like they did in the old days, (I don’t even remember going and buying many school supplies when I was a kid – maybe I am really dating myself!)  Find out from your teacher/school if you need to supply ruled (lined) paper, which will differ from teacher to teacher and grade to grade.
  • Notebooks come in many forms. Your grade school child will probably need some spiral-bound ones as well as some binders. Think slim and trim so the notebooks fit in your child’s desk, no matter what type is required.
  • You also might want to purchase some dividers or pocket folders to help your child stay organized. In addition, the printable Student Planner, that can be found in the Back 2 School Survival Guide can be placed in your child’s notebook.  Having one main place to keep track of daily homework assignments will help your child keep track of due items, but also keep things in one spot ready to turn in.

Let’s get organized for school so you can keep enjoying what’s left of summer!
